History

The BEAR’ly Open has been an annual event in White Bear Lake, Minnesota, since 2008. Led by community volunteer Ken Galloway, the event was established and hosted by White Bear Events and the White Bear Lake Rotary with the goal of bringing the community together for a day of winter fun while raising funds for the White Bear Area Food Shelf. Over the years, it has grown in popularity and has become a beloved tradition in the area.

The tournament typically takes place on the ice-covered surface of White Bear Lake, and participants use unconventional golf equipment, such as tennis balls, to navigate the course. Costumes are encouraged, with an award and enviable bragging rights going to the best team costume. BEAR’ly Open is an official Saint Paul Winter Carnival event, and with the Winter Carnival Royalty stopping by to kick things off and play a round of golf. The golf event features Tent City and hole sponsors, with local businesses and organizations giving away free treats and sway. Ice sculptures, bonfires, and a live DJ with a pop-up dance party complete the frozen fun.

In addition to the Golf on Ice event, the BEAR’ly Open also hosts a Community Dance the evening before, and an online auction that is open all weekend. Net proceeds benefit the White Bear Area Food Shelf.

As the event has gained popularity, BEAR’ly Open has become a winter highlight for the White Bear area community, attracting participants of all ages. The combination of outdoor winter activities, community engagement, and charitable giving has made the BEAR’ly Open a cherished tradition in the region.
